January marks the beginning of a new year, and, for many, a time for resolutions and fresh starts. While you're setting personal goals, don't forget to give your car a little bit of attention. The fluctuating weather can result in extreme driving conditions, which make it more important than ever that your car is in great condition. Take a look at our top tips to make sure your vehicle is ready to keep you safe on the roads.
Tyres
Winter roads can be treacherous, with ice, snow, and rain creating slippery conditions. Start by inspecting your tyres for tread depth and pressure. Tread depth should be a minimum of 1.6mm (that is the rim on a 20p piece), but 3mm is better for enhanced road grip in the winter. With big fluctuations in temperature, it is likely that your tyre pressure will be affected, so check the manufacturer’s recommendation and make sure your tyres are up to standard. If you are unsure about the condition of your tyres, pop to a local specialist for advice.
Battery
Low temperatures mean hard work for car batteries. A weak battery might struggle to start your vehicle on frosty mornings, let alone get your demisters, heating, and lights working, too. Test your battery’s charge and clean any corrosion from the terminals. If your battery is more than three years old, consider replacing it to avoid breakdowns.
Fluids
Fluids make your car run smoothly, and maintaining the correct levels is important all year round. Check the oil level and top up or change it if necessary. Ensure that you have enough coolant and the right mix of antifreeze to prevent freezing. Use a winter-grade washer fluid to prevent freezing and ensure clear visibility.
Lights
The days might be getting longer, but driving in the dark is still likely. Inspect all your lights, including headlights, indicators, brake lights, and fog lights. Replace any blown bulbs and clean the lenses for maximum brightness.
Wipers
Your windscreen wipers have to work hard in the winter. Check for signs of wear, such as cracks or streaking. Replace the blades if needed, and ensure your windscreen is free of chips or cracks that could worsen in the cold. Remember to switch your wipers off when you park up; if they freeze over night and they are switched on, you could damage the motor.
Be prepared
Winter driving can be unpredictable, so it’s wise to carry an emergency kit. Include:
- A torch and extra batteries
- A blanket and warm clothing
- Ice scraper and de-icer
- Jump leads
- Non-perishable snacks and water
Review Your Breakdown Cover
Ensure your breakdown cover is up to date and provides adequate protection for winter travel. Having the right cover can save you a lot of stress if your car fails in adverse conditions.
