VW ordered to recall 8.5 million cars as a result of emissions scandal

Volkswagen will be recalling around 8.5 million cars across Europe, following the diesel emissions scandal, because a ruling in Germany rejected the proposal by VW that owners could voluntarily bring their own cars in for work.

The news of the mandatory recall follows raids by Italian police on the VW offices, and the suspension of a top VW engineer as a result of the internal investigations.

The national motoring watchdog in Germany, the Federal Motor Transport Authority, rejected VW's offer to fix 2.4 million cars sold in Germany, leading to the mandatory recall now announced.

Technical details of the emissions fix must be shared with authorities by mid-November and the recall will begin in January. The ruling will add to the cost of the resolution of the emissions scandal as it seems the company will have to fix the affected cars more quickly than would otherwise have been necessary.

VW set aside £4.8bn to cover the costs of the scandal but experts expect the total cost will be considerably higher than this, with possibly around 11 million cars affected worldwide.
